  2008 Annual General Meeting (Press Release 13 February 2009)

Today Hong Kong Press Council elected its new Chairman and Vice Chairmen representively. Professor Joseph M. Chan was re-elected Chairman, Dr Cheung Kwai Yeung was re-elected Vice Chairmen, Mr. Au Pak Kuen was elected Vice Chairmen.

 

Besides electing the Chairman and Vice- Chairmen, Council members also elected members for the Executive Committee at the meeting. The public members are,

Currently, the Council has 10 press members, including Hong Kong Commercial Daily, Sing Tao Daily News, South China Morning Post, Hong Kong Economic Times, Ming Pao Daily News, Wen Wei Po, China Daily, Sing Pao, Ta Kung Pao and The Standard.

 

The Hong Kong Press Council has received a total of 23 complaints in 2008. Among the cases, intrusion of privacy (14%), indecent and sensational reporting (18%), inaccurate reporting (43%) and other categories (25%) that related to complaints against newspaper columns, libel and discrimination, misbehaviors of journalists and use of inaccurate wordings in media reports. Of the complaints against media received by the Council in 2008, 52% are related to non-member newspapers, 34% of cases involved member newspapers, 14% are related to magazines and others.
